With her color-intensive, finely composed works, Rebecca Raue opens the space for inner journeys. In her paintings she uses ciphers to find an expression for the non-visible world that constitutes each of us at the core. It is about making visible the invisible: individual, subtle lines, trajectories, paths and spaces.
Rebecca Raue presents new works on paper, cardboard and aluminum dibond in Gartow. Under the title “Wanderschaft wagen” she shows pictures that deal with departure and new beginnings. In addition to two or three 145 × 175 works on paper on aluminum dibond, she will show a series of small collages that communicate with each other when presented as a series, yet also function individually.
Rebecca Raue’s works function as mirrors, they are snapshots that refer to complex social content and at the same time tell very individual stories. Through figures, colors, and text fragments, the artist succeeds in playfully confronting viewers with their own inner landscapes and encouraging the courage to share them.
In her works, Rebecca Raue has repeatedly dealt with the concept of home, the question of home, of arriving and departing. In 2004 she showed in the Berlin Konrad Adenauer exhibition 42 works on paper under the title: „Zuhause ist für die meisten Menschen sehr weit weg“ (Home is very far away for most people).
In 2015, she created her work presented throughout Germany and in Chile: “Arriving and Departing” - 14 140 cm long, movable white wooden boats reminiscent of paper boats made by children, built by men who fled in boats across the Mediterranean.
Who are the arrivals? Who are the ones setting out? What wants to be discarded? By whom?
In 2017, she showed a series of 18th-century Syriac/Egyptian illustrations of the Persian Kalila wa Dimna tales at Berlin’s Bumiller Collection, which she subtly and humorously added to and expanded upon. For the artist, these works document a dialogue between centuries, between man and woman.
Wandering through the times. The in-between. Capturing the past and releasing it into the future. Tracing the fleetingness of being.
In a collaboration with the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, Rebecca Raue explored Wilhelm von Humboldt, the structures of the old, new palace, models of future places of education and interpersonal encounters in the spring of 2018, and worked with a group of learners to develop a floor plan of the “Palace of the Future” in which each and everyone can become visible with their strengths and potentials, and empathetic, active listening as well as powerful, truthful storytelling are among the skills in demand.
To dare to wander is also an invitation: to exchange, to be open, to dream and to wish. In an increasingly fast-paced world, we need looking, listening, and an open heart. Rebecca Raues works remind us of this.
